Custom Hardwood Furniture

All Hardman furniture is made to order. Production begins with your purchase, and adjustments are part of how we work rather than an exception to it.

That means you can easily personalize any piece: choose a different wood species or finish, scale a dining table to a specific length, or specify fabric for a sofa. For more significant changes, we can also develop fully custom pieces.

Choose your level of customization

Four ways to work with us, from a simple adjustment to a fully new design.

01

Small Tweaks

Adjust the wood species, finish, grain character, or dimensions of any piece in our collection. This is the most common request and the simplest to execute. If you need a table a little longer, a finish a little lighter, or a bed frame sized to a non-standard width, this is where to start.

We ensure that proportion, balance, and craftsmanship stay the same while adapting the piece to your needs.

02

Mix and Match

Choose features from different Hardman pieces to create something that isn't available as a standard option. A tabletop from one design with a base from another, for example.

This approach keeps the familiar forms of our core collection while giving you a piece that’s distinctly yours.

03

Collection Additions

If you love a Hardman collection but need a piece that isn't part of it, we can design one to match. A side table in the LÜNA style, a bench to pair with a dining table, or a console that fits an existing bedroom set.

We’ll design your new piece to match seamlessly, same proportions, same details, same finish.

04

Fully Custom

Collaborate with our design team on a one-of-a-kind piece that starts from Collaborate with our design team to create a one-of-a-kind piece crafted entirely to your specifications, from the first sketch to the final finish.your ideas or brief. This is for pieces that go well beyond adjustment: new forms, original ideas, and designs that don't exist in our collection yet.

We’ll guide you through material choices, finishes, and design details, providing sketches and 3D models so you can see your piece come to life before it’s built.

Wood Character

For oak and walnut table tops, you can specify how much natural character and knotting you'd like.

Oak tables are available in four grades:

Natural: Some knots and active grain variations. Offers generous character with a warm, lively surface.

Rustic: Rich in rustic features such as larger knots, wavy grain, and natural cracks. A bold, expressive look.

Less Knots: An upgraded oak selection with a calmer, more uniform surface and fewer knots. A refined, understated aesthetic compared to our Natural and Rustic grades.

Grade A: A premium upgrade featuring Grade A oak, carefully selected for its harmonious surface, minimal knots, and consistent grain. The grain lines may be straight or gently wavy. If you have a preference, you can add it to your order notes.

Walnut tables are available in two grades:

Standard: Naturally varied colour with visible tonal contrast and grain variation. Creates a lively, organic surface with natural depth. Colour shifts and subtle variation are part of the character.

Grade A: A premium upgrade featuring carefully selected boards for a more uniform color appearance with minimal strong contrast. Natural grain remains visible. This option focuses on color consistency and does not remove natural features such as knots or fine cracks.

For all of our character options, all knots and cracks are filled with dark epoxy to seal the surface and ensure a smooth, consistent finish.

Wood Finish

All indoor pieces are finished with a plant-based hardwax oil that protects the surface, enhances the grain, and can be renewed over time. Outdoor pieces are treated with a plant-based exterior finish designed to protect against weathering, UV exposure, and daily outdoor use.

Four standard finish options are available:

Matte: a flat, natural surface that lets the grain read clearly

Half-Gloss: a subtle sheen that adds warmth and depth to the wood tone

Teak Oil: warms natural wood tones and makes the grain more pronounced

White Oil: softens oak's natural yellow tone for a cooler, lighter result

Dimensions

We can easily adjust the height, width, or length of most pieces in our collection. Original proportions and design details are preserved as dimensions change. Common requests include extended dining tables, widened bed frames, modified console lengths, and scaled storage pieces.

As an example: our Carolina extendable table is available at standard dimensions that seat 6 to 8, or at custom dimensions that seat 10 to 12.

Fabric and Upholstery

For upholstered pieces, we work with natural Italian linen and leather in a range of natural tones.

We also accept COM (Customers Own Material). Send us your own material and we can use it for any upholstered Hardman piece.

The customization process

01

Consultation

Share your ideas with our team in person at our showroom, online, or over the phone. Reference images, information about your space, measurements, a hand-drawn room layout, or design drawing are all good starting points. We can also send material and finish samples so you can see and feel exactly what you're choosing.

02

Design

Here we translate your ideas into a design. We work with you on proportion, function, and how the piece will live in your space. Then we narrow down material details together: wood species, finish, character, and fabric. For fully custom work, we develop the design from scratch and share renders and technical drawings before anything is built.

03

Production

Our team of over 60 craftspeople builds each piece by hand at our partner workshop in Ukraine.

    Customization FAQ

Can I customize any piece in the Hardman collection? +

Yes. All the pieces in our collection can be customized. We can adjust dimensions, support custom finishes, and help you specify upholstery and fabrics to suit your space or project. For more extensive requests, we can also develop fully bespoke pieces.

What is the difference between semi-custom and fully custom? +

Semi-custom means working within an existing design: adjusting dimensions, choosing a different wood species or finish, or specifying fabric for an upholstered piece. Fully custom means starting from a new brief. This might be a significantly modified version of an existing piece, a new form, or a design that starts from your sketches. We handle both.

Can I get a custom sized dining table? +

Yes. We can adjust the width and length of any dining table in our collection. Original proportions and joinery are preserved as dimensions change. We can also scale tables for larger residential or hospitality projects.

What wood species does Hardman offer? +

We work with three FSC-certified hardwoods: oak, walnut, ash, and iroko. Oak is warm and open-grained. Walnut is darker and richer. Ash is close to oak in structure but slightly lighter in tone.

What finish options are available? +

All indoor pieces are finished with OSMO Polyx Oil, a natural hardwax oil that enhances the natural grain while also being water-resistant, easy to clean, and helps protect against moisture, temperature changes, and everyday stains.

All outdoor pieces are treated with Rubio DuroGrit, a plant-based exterior wood finish designed to protect against weathering, UV exposure, and daily outdoor use.

Our standard finish is Matt, with Half Gloss available at no extra charge. For walnut pieces, we also offer a Teak Oil finish, which makes the natural wood tones warmer and more pronounced. For oak pieces, we offer a White Oil finish, which softens oak’s natural yellow tone.

All wood samples are double-sided to show both sheen options.

Can I choose the grain character or knotting of my wood? +

    Yes, for table tops.

Oak tables are available in four grades:

Natural: Some knots and active grain variations. Offers generous character with a warm, lively surface.

Rustic: Rich in rustic features such as larger knots, wavy grain, and natural cracks. A bold, expressive look.

For all of our character options, all knots and cracks are filled with dark epoxy to seal the surface and ensure a smooth, consistent finish.

What fabric options are available for upholstered pieces? +

We work with natural Italian linen and leather as standard options, along with a range of additional fabrics. We also accept COM on any upholstered Hardman piece.

Can I use my own fabric (COM)? +

Yes. We accept customer's own material on any upholstered piece. Send us your fabric and we'll use it.

How long does a custom or semi-custom order take? +

Lead times for custom and semi-custom work depend on the scope of the project and are confirmed during the consultation stage. Standard collection pieces have a lead time of 16 to 22 weeks.

Do you work with interior designers on custom projects? +

Yes. Custom and semi-custom work is a core part of the Hardman Trade Program. Trade partners work with experienced, dedicated team members from initial pricing through production. Finish samples, spec sheets, CAD files, and 3D models are available on request.
